Yukon NDP’s Kate White issues statement on motion to hold Eagle mine receiver in contempt

WHITEHORSE, YT —
The Yukon NDP is renewing calls for a public inquiry into the Eagle Gold Mine Disaster after the Yukon Party called on MLAs to hold the failed mine’s receiver in contempt of the Legislature.

NDP Leader Kate White made the following statement Friday, April 25, after a letter from the receiver PricewaterhouseCoopers, Inc., was tabled in the House.

“The Yukon NDP’s concern is not with the receiver who is cleaning up Victoria Gold’s mess. It is with this Government’s failure to call a public inquiry into Eagle mine, and its failure to hold accountable those who created this mess in the first place,” White said.

“Damaging the relationship with the receiver when they are actively trying to repair the damage caused by Victoria Gold is concerning and presents significant risk,” White continued.

“This is not about the receiver: This is about public accountability for the Eagle Gold mine disaster. Yukoners want a public inquiry, but they’re being ignored by the Liberal Government”.
