Yukon NDP will Rebuild Schools, Support Educators and Deliver Quality Education for Every Child

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, Whitehorse, Yukon – The Yukon NDP says it’s time to fix what years of Liberal and Conservative Yukon Party governments have neglected: Yukon schools.

“Across the territory, schools are understaffed, overcrowded, and falling apart,” said Yukon NDP Leader Kate White. “Educators, parents, public servants, the First Nation School Board and the Conseil Scolaire Francophone du Yukon are working hard for Yukon kids, but the Conservative Yukon Party and the Liberals have turned their backs on those doing the work. It’s time Yukoners had a team you can count on.”

The Yukon NDP’s education plan focuses on rebuilding schools, hiring more educators, and ensuring every child – in Whitehorse and in communities – can learn in a safe, modern environment.

Key commitments will:

  • Provide stable funding to the Yukon First Nations School Board and build a positive working relationship to deliver quality education to every Yukon child.
  • Replace schools that need replacement with modernized facilities and ensure all new schools account for future growth.
  • Open a public downtown elementary school.
  • Repair schools in communities, including new roofs in Haines Junction, Teslin and Beaver Creek.
  • Hire and train more teachers to fill all vacancies by using the NWT government’s successful recruitment model. With full teacher staffing, Yukon children will get the education they deserve.
  • Hire 35 new Education Assistants to support educators across the Yukon.
  • Cover the cost of tuition at Yukon University for educators who agree to work in the Yukon for at least 5 years.
  • Expanding supports for kids with complex needs by working with the Yukon Association of Education Professionals to create wraparound programs.

“Yukoners have dealt with Liberal and Conservative governments passing the problem back and forth, and Yukon kids are paying the price.” said Lane Tredger, Yukon NDP candidate for Whitehorse West and Housing Critic. “We’ve seen the Liberals take a school away from downtown, and the Conservative Yukon Party build too-small schools that work for no one. We’ll listen to educators, invest in our kids, and build the schools our communities deserve.”
