Yukon NDP supports Safe at Home’s calls to action

Whitehorse, YT — The Yukon NDP adds its voice to the 10 calls to action published by the Safe at Home Society. The first call to action is to ban no-cause evictions — an issue the Yukon NDP has long been advocating for.

The Yukon is one of only two Canadians jurisdictions that still allow no-cause evictions. In all other jurisdictions, landlords must provide a reason for eviction, such as moving in a family member.

Under the current Yukon Liberal government, tenants can be evicted for no reason at all.

“The Liberal government has the power to end no-cause evictions right now. They’re choosing to let people get evicted. They are choosing to let people lose their homes and be at risk of homelessness” Emily Tredger, MLA for Whitehorse Centre, said.

Tenants in the Yukon deserve better protections. No one should be afraid of losing their homes without a reason.

The Yukon NDP is once again calling on the Liberals to do the right thing: Ban no-cause evictions to better protect all tenants.
