Yukon NDP promises new childcare centre, more supports for educators

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 27, 2025

Territory of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, Dawson City, Yukon – Today, Leader Kate White and Klondike candidate Brent McDonald announced that a Yukon NDP government will build a new childcare centre in Dawson City, increase funding to the Early Learning and Childcare Program and index that funding to inflation – to help existing centres across the Yukon keep up with costs, recruit and retain staff and increase the number of childcare spaces available.

“The Yukon’s growing, but families can’t find childcare,” said White. “The Liberals promised a new home for Little Blue Learning Centre and didn’t deliver. We can do better. Yukoners deserve a government you can count on to build the spaces families need – in Dawson City and across the territory.”

Standing outside the Little Blue Learning Centre, White and McDonald made their commitment to improve childcare for families and educators.

‘Little Blue’ symbolizes years of Liberal inaction. Former Premier Sandy Silver promised a new home for Little Blue and more childcare spaces for Dawson City – but nine years later families are still waiting.

As former President of the Little Blue Daycare Board, McDonald has been a champion for affordable childcare, helping to lay the groundwork for Yukon’s universal childcare program. Now, he says, it’s time for a government Dawson can count on.

“For too long, families have been ignored,” said McDonald. “The people who care for our kids are doing everything they can – but they need a partner in government to do the work together. That’s why I’m running with Kate and the Yukon NDP. Together, we’ll invest in childcare and get more families the affordable high quality care they need.”

White and McDonald promised immediate action.

A Yukon NDP government will help childcare centres across the Yukon keep up with $10/day childcare by increasing funding to the Early Learning and Childcare Program, tying it to inflation – and finally open the long-promised new childcare centre here in Dawson City.

“Families here in the Klondike have been waiting far too long,” said White. “We are focused on lowering costs for Yukoners and one of the easiest ways we can do that is to ensure that young families have the access to affordable childcare spaces they deserve.”
