Yukon NDP calls on Liberal Government to do more to prevent crime in Downtown Whitehorse

WHITEHORSE, YT –The Yukon NDP is calling on the Yukon Liberal Government to take action to address increasing crime rates in downtown Whitehorse.

“I’m deeply concerned, but unfortunately unsurprised by the recent report from the RCMP stating the significant increase in theft and break-ins in Downtown Whitehorse.” Yukon NDP MLA for Whitehorse Centre, Lane Tredger said

“I’ve spoken directly with many of the affected business owners and residents and heard how hard it has been on them. These Yukoners are paying the price for government inaction, and they deserve adequate supports. Crime is a problem, and it needs to stop. The only effective way to stop crime is to prevent it.” Tredger said.

“Evidence shows that the most effective way to prevent crime is by investing in community supports for everyone, an area the Liberals are falling short on. Preventing crime goes hand in hand with creating a vibrant, livable downtown – that includes an elementary school.” Tredger continued.
