Yukon NDP backs Yukon Home Builders in call to lower the cost of homes for Yukoners, increase transparency in lot prices

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 16, 2025
Territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwachan Council, Whitehorse,
Yukon — Leader of the Yukon NDP Kate White issued the following statement Tuesday, September 16, after meeting with the Yukon Contractors’ Association (YCA) Home Builders’ Caucus:
“Whether you’re a buyer, a renter or a home builder, every Yukoner is being hit hard by the housing crisis,” said White. “The best way to lower the cost of homes for Yukoners is to build more homes, faster. Instead, the Liberal government is making the process harder for builders. In Whistle Bend, the Phase 9 tender has created an unfair process that will drive up the cost of housing.”
With the release of the Whistle Bend Phase 9 tender, the Liberal government has inflated land prices by 35% since last year — with no explanation or justification. That means every home built on that land is going to go up in price, making the cost of owning a home even more expensive for Yukoners. While the cost of lots for tender have increased, the lots offered in the land lottery process have stayed the same.
“The last thing Yukoners need right now is for the cost of housing to increase. Yukoners need a government that works with their industry partners to do what they do best — build homes. A Yukon NDP government is ready to do just that.” White said.
Together, White and the YCA Home Builders’ Caucus are calling on the Liberal Government to allow the Whistlebend Phase 9 lottery to go ahead while pausing the tender process for contractors until the government meets with industry experts to build transparency and fairness into the tender process.
“Townhouse and multi family lots should be the most affordable lots YG puts out, a 35% year over year increase is making these lots more expensive than equivalent sized single family lots,” said John Vogt, Owner of Vogt Homes and founding member of the YCA Home Builders’ Caucus.
This is forcing builders to pass on the cost to home buyers and will drive up the price of all homes across Whitehorse. The YCA Homebuilders’ Caucus is requesting a pause to the tender process so that the pricing model can be reviewed in an attempt to rein in housing prices.”
