Corporate filings show that companies listed as Canadian-based are actually US-owned – including one company linked to Donald Trump Jr.
Territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, Whitehorse, Yukon – From Salt Lake City, Utah to Sydney, Australia, foreign cash is influencing Yukon politics as public filings show that the Conservative Yukon Party has accepted thousands of dollars in donations from American and international corporations – some of which are disguised as Yukon-based donations. The Yukon remains the only jurisdiction in Canada that allows out-of-country political donations.
“This raises very serious questions about who is funding the party and what kind of influence these foreign donors have,” said Kate White, Leader of the Yukon NDP. “This is yet another example of corporate donations influencing Yukon politics. It’s time to ban corporate and union donations to put Yukoners first – above all else.”
Since the 2021 territorial election, the Conservative Yukon Party has seen an influx of foreign donations – some easier to track than others. Election records show that many of the Conservative Yukon Party’s biggest donors come from out of the country. Donations from foreign corporations like $3,000 from Worldwide Trophy Adventures out of Sydney, Australia are clearly recorded in the Chief Electoral Officer’s official reports for Elections Yukon. However, most are much better hidden.
Election records show companies like MacMillan River Adventures Ltd. – who donated $1,000 in 2021 – listed as based in High River, Alberta. However, the company’s corporate filings show that 6 of the 7 directors are American – including Donald Trump Jr. – and according to one of its directors, Chuck Paddock, the outfitter is US-owned.
It’s not the only example. The Conservative Yukon Party filings show they received $5,000 in 2021 from 45325 Yukon Inc. – supposedly based here in Whitehorse. However, corporate records show that the hidden numbered company is actually Yukon Stone Holdings, based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. The company directors include Aaron and Anne Florian, who show up frequently in Conservative Yukon Party filings. They represented nearly 10% of all of the Conservative Yukon Party’s monetary donations in the 2021 campaign. The Americans have donated a total of $3,225 under their own names since 2021, but more commonly use their corporations to fund the Conservative Yukon Party – such as $2,000 from 839252 Yukon Inc. or Moose Creek Outfitters and another $2,400 donation from 45325 Yukon Inc. in 2024.
Under both the leadership of the Conservative Yukon Party and the Yukon Liberal Party, the Yukon is the only jurisdiction in Canada that allows for out-of-country donations.
“Yukoners deserve to know who is funding and influencing their politics,” said White. “The Conservative Yukon Party should be honest with voters and share just how much money they’ve received from American donors – including those they’ve wrongly listed as Yukon-based.”
“We need a government that is going to stand up for Yukoners and our economy. That’s exactly what a Yukon NDP government would do.”
