Environmental advocate and former lawyer Carmen Gustafson to seek Riverdale North NDP Nomination
June 6, 2025
Territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation & Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, Whitehorse, YT –
Carmen Gustafson, an experienced advocate and former lawyer, announced she is seeking the
Yukon NDP nomination for Riverdale North for the 2025 territorial election.
“We need to ensure that as our territory grows, Indigenous rights and the environment are
protected and respected. Throughout my life, I have advocated for the rights of people and
worked to protect the environment, and that’s why I’m running to be an MLA,” she said. “I know
Kate White and the Yukon NDP will do what’s best for Yukoners and our environment.”
“Yukoners are tired of the Liberals and the Yukon Party putting projects that aren’t in the public
interest over the interests of Yukoners, First Nations and our environment. We need a
government that puts people at the heart of its decision-making and that’s why I’m running
with the Yukon NDP.” Gustafson added.
“Carmen understands the work we need to do to achieve a balance between a healthy
environment and a strong economy that supports families that are struggling with costs of
living,” said Yukon NDP leader Kate White. “Her experience in law, human rights and as a
champion for sustainability will help build a better future for our territory.”
Carmen is not new to politics, having been a municipal councilor and environmental advocate
in her hometown of Golden, BC. She worked as a lawyer for 12 years, first representing
residential school survivors, then as the lawyer at the Yukon Law Line and later in environmental
and natural resources law at the Yukon government. Carmen has also served as the Deputy
Chief Adjudicator for the Yukon Human Rights Panel of Adjudicators.
