Kate White and Yukon NDP Announce Plan for Good Jobs in Every Yukon Community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 15, 2025

Territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, Whitehorse, Yukon  Today, Yukon NDP Leader Kate White announced the party’s plan to create more good-paying jobs for Yukoners by decentralizing government positions, supporting the trades, and ensuring that public spending benefits local communities.

A Red Seal tradesperson herself, White was joined by Billy Bromell, Vice President of Yukon Carpenters Union Local 2499, and two of several Yukon NDP candidates who are tradespeople: Chris Dunbar and Dustin McKenzie-Hubbard.

“Yukoners deserve the opportunity to build their future here at home,” said Kate White, Leader of the Yukon NDP. “For too long, the Liberals and the Conservative Yukon Party have failed to invest in the trades and in opportunities for rural Yukon. We’ll change that by creating good jobs in every community, supporting apprenticeships, and making sure government spending benefits Yukoners first.”

The Yukon NDP’s plan will put Yukoners workers and businesses first in government hiring and procurement, so people across the territory can train and find good-paying jobs close to home.

The Yukon NDP’s Jobs for Yukoners Plan includes:

  • Create a Hire Yukon Communities plan to decentralize government jobs so people can live and work in their home communities.
  • Bringing trades apprenticeship opportunities into communities by supporting First Nation-Union partnerships in collaboration with industry and Yukon University.
  • Build projects that benefit Yukoners with a new values-based procurement policy that requires community benefit agreements on major projects, with local hiring and fair wages.

Under the Liberals and the Conservative Yukon Party, workers have struggled to find the training and apprenticeship opportunities they need to get certified, resulting in a shortage of workers. The Conservative Yukon Party removed preference for Yukon businesses from their rules for purchasing goods and services. As job opportunities have stagnated, so have projects for the homes and infrastructure Yukoners desperately need.

The Yukon NDP will create good-paying jobs for Yukoners right away, with the training and projects workers need to succeed. These projects will put local businesses and workers first: keeping good jobs, training opportunities, and public investment in the territory.

“Too often, on big infrastructure projects in the Yukon, local tradespeople and aspiring tradespeople are left on the sidelines,” said Billy Bromell, Vice President of the Yukon Carpenters Union Local 2499. “We can’t hire local if we haven’t trained local. The Yukon NDP’s plan will make sure major projects are built by Yukoners, for Yukoners, with fair wages, apprenticeships, and pride in the work that lasts for generations.”
