Josie O’Brien, a Ross River Dena Council citizen and Manager with the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN), announced she is seeking the Yukon NDP nomination in Watson Lake-Ross River-Faro for the 2025 territorial election.

“I’m honoured to step up and run to represent our community,” said O’Brien. “My whole life, I’ve been a helper, working hard to support Yukoners. I learned this value from my parents and grandparents, who have been in leadership roles — their work inspired me to step up and run with Kate White and the Yukon NDP. Together, we will make it easier for people in Watson Lake, Faro and Ross River to live a good life, with the supports they need.”

O’Brien is a citizen of Ross River Dena Council and a proud mom to four kids. She currently works as the Manager of Family Preservation Prenatal and Infant Support. In her work, she has supported countless Yukon families with the health and social supports they need to succeed.

She grew up in a family with a deep connection to the land and to traditional practices that have been passed down for generations, which led to her pursuing educational opportunities and a career in environmental stewardship and resource management. O’Brien has a certificate in Aboriginal Justice Studies and, before her work in Family Preservation, served as an Indigenous Court Worker.

“Josie is an incredible advocate for people,” said Yukon NDP leader Kate White. “Her work is grounded in the lessons she’s learned from her family and community. These values, of listening and standing up for people, are ones that our Yukon NDP team shares. I’m honoured Josie is running with our Yukon NDP team. Yukoners in Watson Lake-Ross River-Faro can count on Josie and our team to work hard for you.”
