Yukon NDP Says ATCO Review Falls Short of the Independent Investigation Yukoners Have Been Demanding

Whitehorse, Yukon — Yukon NDP Leader Kate White says the Yukon Party government’s response to ATCO and YEC billing issues falls short of the fully independent investigation that Yukoners have been calling for.

The response comes after months of the Yukon NDP pressuring the government and collecting hundreds of petition signatures from Yukoners who have been hit with inaccurate and confusing electricity bills.

The Yukon NDP called on the Yukon Government to ask the Yukon Utilities Board, the regulator, to investigate YEC and ATCO, rather than allow the corporations to review themselves. 

“The government has tried to justify their refusal to require an independent Yukon Utilities Board investigation by claiming it would raise costs for Yukon ratepayers,” said Yukon NDP Leader Kate White. “When in reality the Yukon Party government can decide how the investigation is paid for, and they have the power to ensure ratepayers aren’t the ones footing the bill. Unfortunately, they’ve decided to leave ATCO to manage the investigation – the very company that Yukoners have lost faith in – and there is no guarantee that cost won’t be downloaded by ATCO to ratepayers.”

This announcement also does nothing to address the billing concerns Yukoners have raised with YEC, and it comes with no public engagement process for Yukoners to have their say.

“A review commissioned and paid for by ATCO is not the same as an independent regulatory investigation through the Yukon Utilities Board,” said MLA Carmen Gustafson. “Yukoners deserve a transparent, open investigation process. This process should not be directed by the very company being investigated.”

The Yukon NDP will be watching closely as this review moves forward and will continue to press the government to ensure Yukoners receive the answers and accountability they need regarding their energy bills. The Yukon NDP won’t let up until Yukoners get the answers and the protections they deserve.
