Yukon NDP Calls on the Yukon Government to investigate ATCO and Yukon Energy Electricity Bills

Whitehorse, Yukon — The Yukon NDP is calling on the Yukon Party Government to ask for an investigation by the Yukon Utilities Board into ATCO and Yukon Energy electricity bills.

Throughout the summer, The Yukon NDP will be circulating a petition calling on the Yukon Party Government to order an investigation into electricity billing.

“We’ve heard from Yukoners who received electricity bills that are hundreds or even thousands of dollars higher than expected, and it has hit people incredibly hard,” said Kate White, Leader of the Yukon NDP.

“Yukoners deserve affordable, accurate, and fair electricity bills, an investigation is needed to make sure that billing is exactly that.”

An investigation into the billing by public utilities would help identify any problematic billing practices, like long periods of charging people based on estimates instead of actual electricity used, followed by huge swings in costs when the estimates are corrected. It would also identify any additional errors that may have happened or are being made.

“This is a huge concern for Yukoners,” said MLA Carmen Gustafson, Yukon NDP critic for Energy Mines and Resources. “The Yukon Government needs to stand up for Yukoners. And the first step to fixing the problem is a transparent look into what’s actually going on.”
